I get so excited thinking that we’ll be mortgage debt free in 18-24 months. While we’re so close, we still have life to live. Life is full of surprises and can change our estimated debt free date sometimes, too. Simply growing our family and parenting a child with food allergies has impacted when we can be 100% debt free. Recently, we received some family news that has us re-evaluating our debt free date. I want to share our reasons for why we’re delaying our debt free date. Why we’re delaying our debt free dateEarlier this year, we received some sad news that our aunt has cancer. Immediately, we knew we wanted to visit her, but we were unsure of what the costs would be and how it would impact our debt free date. I’d like to say that we immediately, without hesitation, booked our flights. In reality, that didn’t happen. Spending money on flights to Alaska was a big deal given how much we’ve said no along this journey. In the few weeks after the news, one thought always circled back to me. My dad died of brain cancer in 2012 when I was 21. In that experience, I learned that telling someone you love them in person and meaning it sets the tone for how you’ll remember and feel about them when they’re gone. I don’t want to be that person who never visits or calls during a diagnosis like this until the end stages. Spending money on this trip is a value add to our life because people are more important than money. I don’t know what will happen with our aunt, but I hope that she’ll enjoy some laughter, kindness and warmth while she’s fighting her battle.
The estimated trip costsWe’re estimating that the costs of the the trip will postpone our debt free date by one month. The costs are:
- Flights: $1,429 (already purchased)
- Hotels: $0
- Food, gas, entertainment, etc: $800 (estimated)
- Dog care: $250* (estimated)
